Welcome to Maryland / The first Capital of the United States was in Annapolis (1783 – 1784) now the State Capital of Maryland. During the war of 1812 the British were repulsed at the Battle of North Point. Frances Scott Key was inspired to write the Star-Spangled Banner while a hostage of the British during the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore Sept. 12, 1814. 203 mile of the Appallachian Trail run along the mountain ridges of Maryland. The C&O Canal extends from near Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland following the Potomac River, which divides Maryland from West Virginia and is 162 miles in length. The Chesapeake Bay is the greatest inland sea in america (185 miles long).
